Whole / Apart series deals with the political split of East African people now identifying themselves as either Eritrean or Ethiopians. A split that has made a deep impact on my family as well as millions of people in Eritrea and Ethiopia. While impossible to reconstruct a history of pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial devastations in the region of my birth, I choose to make works of art that depict objects ingrained in the daily experiences of both Eritrean and Ethiopian people in order to raise questions that open ways towards possible reintegration.
